AI Will Not Build Your Business Website

AI website builders are everywhere now. A lot of small business owners ask whether they should just use one. Here's the actual answer, and why.

AI website builders are everywhere now. ChatGPT will write you copy. Framer can spit out a layout. Bolt and Lovable advertise “build a complete website in five minutes.” A lot of small business owners I talk to ask whether they should just use one of those.

The actual answer is no, but the reason is different from what you might expect.

The AI-built site looks fine

The thing about AI website builders is that the output is often, technically, a website. It has pages. It has content. It usually has a contact form. The colors aren’t terrible. On the surface, it’s hard to argue the result is bad.

What you’re paying for when you hire someone to build a website isn’t really the website. It’s the thinking that went into the website. The decisions about what should be on the homepage versus the about page. The choice to lead with credibility instead of services. The reason for picking Cinzel over Helvetica. The structural decision to put the reservation button above the fold.

AI doesn’t make those decisions. It guesses. It does whatever the average of its training data does, which is the average of every mediocre business website ever published.

The compounding problem

The deeper issue with AI-built sites is what happens over time.

A custom site has someone behind it who understands how the pieces fit together. When you need a new page added in six months, they can do it without breaking the existing design. When SEO needs updating, they know where to look. When a plugin breaks, they fix it.

An AI-built site has nobody behind it. The next time you need a change, you either tell the AI builder again (and hope it doesn’t redo half the site in the process) or you find someone to fix it manually. Most of the developers I know charge more to fix an AI-built site than they would to build a custom one from scratch, because the AI output is often a tangled mess underneath.

When AI is fine

If you need a static one-pager for a side project, or a coming-soon page while you build the real thing, an AI site is fine. It costs nothing. It takes minutes. The stakes are low.

If your business depends on the site for leads, the math changes. The cost of a bad website isn’t the build cost. It’s the leads you don’t get. AI saves you money on the build and costs you money on the leads.

If you want a site that takes pressure off your business instead of adding it, we should talk.
